WELCOMEThe work I have chosen to display on this website is a very small selection of the vast number of paintings created over the past 30 years or so. They include oil, watercolour and gouache. Sizes range from 72 x 48 inches down to 12 x 8 inches. Subjects include landscape and architecture, figure, still life and interiors often instigated by an observed juxtaposition of colours, shapes, tones or textures that excite and tempt me. I have travelled quite extensively during my life as a painter, and a recent trip to Peru (raising finds for Cancer Research UK) has given me an enormous wealth of source material for a series of paintings on which I have embarked. My last solo exhibition in Worthing Museum & Art Gallery in the year 2000 had around 70 canvases on show. I have exhibited work many times in London, including the Mall galleries and Central Hall, Westminster. Work now hangs in private collections both at home and abroad, as do my commissioned portraits depicting many well-known Sussex dignitaries and personalities. Although current conceptual movements have marginalized painting, there are still those of us who have chosen not to participate in what many people see as a leap of freedom into an Art World without boundaries. I enjoy the restriction that I encounter with just paint and canvas. I love to be moved enough by the subject matter in front of me to feel the need to express a response in paint. It feels like a great privilege to me. The thrill of playing with the paint, teasing it, shoving it around on a sometimes greedy sometimes saturated flat surface, can be totally absorbing. Within the act of production every emotion can be triggered as I alternate between gaining and losing control in the often-fierce battle of creation. | ||||
